Yiayia's Garden
Ο Κήπος της Γιαγιάς
Yiayia's Garden O Κήπος της Γιαγιά Yiayia’s backyard may be mostly concrete, but she’s transformed it into a thriving garden. With an enormous lemon tree producing fruit bigger than her head and a small veggie patch overflowing with tomatoes, herbs, and grape vines, she’s made every inch count. The vines climb wherever they can, and her garden’s bounty finds its way into almost every dish she cooks. Tomatoes Ντομάτες The pride of Yiayia’s summer garden, her tomatoes are juicy, sweet, and full of flavour. Plant them in spring when the soil has warmed, and give them plenty of sunlight and water. To maintain healthy plants, stake them early and prune any lower leaves to improve airflow. Chillies Τσίλιες Yiayia’s chillies add the perfect kick to her recipes, whether fresh or dried. Plant them in late spring, ensuring they get plenty of sun and warmth. Water regularly, but don’t overdo it — chillies like their roots to dry out between drinks. Lemons Λεμόνια Her massive lemon trees are a year-round treasure, with fruit that’s perfect for salads, marinades, or a quick squeeze over roasted meat. The best time to plant a lemon tree is in spring, and it needs well- draining soil and regular watering. Prune lightly after fruiting to keep the tree healthy and productive. Herbs Βότανα Parsley, rosemary, oregano and other hardy herbs are always thriving in Yiayia’s garden. The orenago originally came from Greece, and has been thriving for over 50 years. Plant parsley in early spring for best results and rosemary anytime in a sunny spot with well- draining soil. Regular trimming not only keeps them neat but also encourages fresh growth.
