Greek Easter at Milton St Serves: A village Prep time: Once a year Cook time: At least 3 days prior Oρθόδοξο Πάσχα Greek Easter is one of the most important celebrations in the Orthodox calendar, always falling on the first Sunday after the full moon and after Passover, symbolising renewal and rebirth. The date changes each year, but the traditions are always the same, and for our family that means gathering at Milton Street without fail. Food plays a huge role in Greek Easter. The table overflows with souvlaki (see page 57), Yiayia’s potatoes (see page 83), tzatziki (see page 87) and of course, flaounas (see page 53). You know its Easter when the smell of spit roast wafts through the streets, and greets you at the front door. It's the envy of the all the neighbours, and for the select lucky few who get an invitation. In recent times, Greek Easter has evolved to include friends of the family, and although they may not be Greek in origin, get to celebrate Greek Easter. The highlight is always the egg-cracking competition, where each person tries to crack the other’s red-dyed egg without breaking their own. Peter tries to cheat every year, but somehow still never wins. !
