What’s better than freshly baked bread? This absolute beginner’s recipe is as simple as it gets and takes no time to pull together. You can shape small balls and cook them on a hot pan for quick pita-like bread, make small rolls, or bake one large loaf. If you're feeling fancy, you can level-up your bread with your favourite seeds, nuts, or even olives.
Main
Ingredients
- 1.5 cups of warm water
- 1 instant yeast sachet
- 3 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 3 cups plain flour, or bakers flour
- (plus extra for kneading)
- 1 teaspoon salt
Method
- Preheat the oven to 230°C degrees bake or 220°C degrees fan bake
- In a measuring jug, add a sachet of instant yeast into 1 cup of warm water and stir to dissolve
- Add the vegetable oil to the jug and stir
- In a large bowl, sieve flour and add salt, stirring together lightly
- Pour in the liquid and mix together until a rough dough is formed
- On a floured surface, knead the dough for about 10 minutes. The texture you're aiming for is smooth and elastic. Add more water if it's dry, and more flour if it’s too wet
- Form the dough into a ball and place in a bowl. Cover it with a tea towel or plastic wrap and leave it a warm place until it doubles in size (around an hour)
- Once risen, shape the dough however you like and place on an oiled baking tray
- Bake in the oven for around 30 minutes until golden brown
